Glasair Aviation surprised many attendees walking into its Sun 'n Fun booth with two new developmental products. With the financial backing of the fairly recent Chinese ownership takeover by Jilin Hanxing Group, the Arlington, Washington-based company is introducing an LSA design and has selected a diesel engine to power the experimental Sportsman, known for its two-weeks-to-taxi program. The high-wing Merlin LSA design is reminiscent of Cessna's former LSA offering, the Skycatcher, with gull-wing-style doors and a control stick that protrudes underneath the panel. The cabin is nice and roomy, and a skylight makes it appear even more spacious, likely without adding too much heat to the interior since the windows are tinted.
