New life has been brought to Italian airplane maker Piaggio Aero because Abu-Dhabi-based Mubadala Development Co. has purchased the majority share of the company. The availability of investment dollars enabled the makers of the beautifully designed P.180 Avanti twin-pusher turboprop to revitalize the design, putting to market the Avanti Evo. The modifications, which include the addition of winglets and five-blade scimitar propellers and a redesign of the front wing and engine nacelles, translate into a significant increase in the range, allowing the Evo to travel 1,720 nautical miles, 17 percent more than the Avanti Ⅱ. The mods also provide a 3 percent reduction in the fuel burn and a 3 percent improvement in the climb performance. The top speed remains about the same at 402 knots, which makes the Piaggio the fastest turboprop in the world at a speed that approaches and even beats out the max speed of some light jets.
