Solar Impulse 2, the giant solar-powered airplane that's aiming to be the first to fly around the world using only solar power, has commenced flight testing in Payerne, Switzerland. The test pilots will steadily expand the operating envelope until the history-making aircraft gets signed off and prepared for its global voyage. During its maiden flight on June 2, Solar Impulse 2 climbed to nearly 6,000 feet and remained aloft for two hours and 17 minutes. Flights since then have seen the massive airplane fly higher and stay in the air longer. The Solar Impulse 2 is a larger version of its predecessor, the original Solar Impulse that was flown by the company's founders, Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg, on several record journeys including the first cross-country trips by a solar-powered airplane at night. During its U.S. voyage last year, Solar Impulse flew from coast to coast and set a record by covering a distance of 832 nautical miles in a single hop.
