When Lightspeed shipped me a brand-new Zulu PFX headset to try out on my way to and from the Oshkosh AirVenture fly-in, Lightspeed promised that I'd be impressed with the PFX and seemed hopeful I'd be blown away with the model's promised sound attenuating capabilities. To quiet the cockpit the PFX Lightspeed uses a technology it calls "acoustic response mapping," which it says adapts "the auditory response to your ear's size and shape." The PFX also uses a new technology Lightspeed calls "streaming ANR" [active noise reduction] in order to continuously adjust the noise attenuation to the actual sounds of the cockpit. A computer located in the controller box compares the sound of the ambient noise (the noise of the cockpit) with the noise your ear is actually hearing and continuously adjusts the ANR response to quiet things down.
