General Electric jumped into the turboprop market in 2008 with the acquisition of Walter Engines, the Czech Republic maker of the M601 engine, a highly regarded design that has logged more than 17 million flight hours in more than 30 applications since its introduction in 1975. GE's first order of business was to rebrand Walter as GE Business and General Aviation Turboprops. Next, it set out to redesign the engine, improving the M601's fuel consumption by 7 percent while wringing out an extra 50 horsepower through the use of 3-D aerodynamics and new materials.
