With redesigned ailerons and flaps, Aviat has transformed the A-1B Husky from an excellent two-place utility airplane into one that is near perfect. Gone are the scalp-slicing spades that hung beneath the old ailerons. In their place is a clean, deeper chord, narrower span aileron pro- ducing a delightful nimbleness that I found missing when flying the former Husky two years ago (Flying, October, 2003). Control harmony is noticeably improved, and the roll rate is much higher with a significantly lighter stick force. Space leftover from the narrower ailerons is used for wider span flaps giving a welcome steeper descent path. So, in one seemingly simple stroke, Aviat has eliminated what to me were the former models major shortcomings. Two lesser ones remain: the skull-cracking flap hinges, and the bungee elevator trim system. Both will be addressed in future revisions. The Husky remains a relatively simple personal airplane, but a deceptively sophisticated one as we shall see.
