In late july my wife janet and i left Toledo in the haze penetrating the overcast on an IFR flight plan to Boston for a visit with our daughter Linda and her fiance, with plans to rent a car and revisit the coast of Maine. We had filed for Binghamton, New York, a fuel stop, and were proceeding along at 5,000 feet in our 82 Archer equipped with autopilot, HSI, panel GPS, Stormscope and an array of radios. After two hours into the flight we were in clouds and haze, approaching Elmira, New York, with Binghamton reporting 600 overcast and one mile in fog and haze. An occluded front had been drifting over our route of flight for a couple of days saturating the atmosphere with moisture creating IFR conditions.
