On August 3, 1981, 10,438 air traffic controllers walked off the job and were subsequently fired by President Reagan. Forty-seven hundred controllers remained on the job, joined by 5,643 new hires in 1982, 3,062 in 1983, then, through 1991 the FAA hired an average of 2,655 controllers a year. The significance of this is that a controller is eligible to retire if over 50 years old with 20 years of service, at any age with 25 years of service, and there's a mandatory retirement age of 56 though the FAA is seeking the right to let some controllers work beyond that age. A widely-circulated FAA estimate suggests that 11,000 of 15,000 current controllers will be retiring in the next 10 years because so many were hired coming up on 25 years ago as a result of the strike/firing. The FAA's public affairs office recendy put the number of retirees in the next 10 years lower, at 8,265.
