By the time you read this the new Cessna Mustang very light business jet may have made its first flight. But that first flight of the aluminum Mustang will come after human and automatic pilots have spent hundreds of hours flying the iron bird version of the airplane. Iron birds have been part of airplane development for decades, but Cessna is doing a lot more with its iron bird than the traditional test rig has done in the past. Iron birds are typically used to configure and test the various systems of an airplane during development. The name comes from the Erector Set style of framework used to support the wires, ducts, cables and other elements of an airplane over their actual size and run without building the real airplane.
