You know the flap track fairings on Boeings? The ones that are about the size of Ercoupes? You have to wonder what's going on in there. A tennis match? They remind me of the huge spats that Northrop put on the landing gears of some of its airplanes back in the '30s. At a certain point, you'd think a fairing that big would produce just as much drag as the thing that it encloses. At what point? That was the question that hung in the air when I set out to make fairings for the flap tracks of my homebuilt. For more than two years I had flown with the tracks exposed, and I always wondered how much performance I was losing to them. It's hard to estimate. Compared to the complete airplane they're small; but as flap tracks go they're pretty big, because the Fowler flaps roll all the way to the trailing edge of the wing before deflecting 30 degrees. The tracks are irregularly shaped, sharpedged, and tilted 10 degrees to the air stream (because they're mounted at a right angle to the rear spar, which angles forward). They look as though they must be about as draggy as an object of their size possibly could be.
