Navigating is something that we do when flying VFR and IFR, and as a pilot transitions to instrument flying the en route portion of navigation should really just be an extension of good VFR skills. However, if a VFR pilot has been getting by mainly with the "direct to" function of a GPS then there is a lot to learn. There needs to be a plan for every flight regardless of the form of navigation that is used. The most basic is a line drawn on a sectional chart. Next would be the use of basic and outmoded navaids such as VOR, with the plan based on going from VOR to VOR. What most pilots are using is GPS navigation. This too works best with a plan. A flight plan should be put into the GPS for every flight. The drill then becomes one of flying from waypoint to waypoint.
