I've always been a bit leery of the usefulness of a small PDA in an airplane cockpit, particularly in turbulence. The idea of trying to tap on the screen with a stylus with the airplane bouncing around seemed too much for my limited dexterity. So it was with some apprehension that I accepted an invitation from NAVAir's Amir Tirosh to see how his system worked on an IPAQ HX4705 PDA with Bluetooth GPS. The NAVAir system has several advantages over other systems. The program uses the entire screen all the time to display the map and provides the flight and navigation status on transparent overlays. The menus are translucent so even when you access them you can still see the map behind them. And the menu buttons are large enough so you can tap them with a finger or target them pretty easily with a stylus. But because all hardware buttons (four buttons and five positions on the top hat) are used to gain access to all functions you need in flight, the need to do any stylus tapping is gready reduced. For example, the five top-hat positions control zoom in and out, weather, compass mode and direct.
