Pilots rarely get themselves into trouble with the FAA for operating an aircraft while under the influence of alcohol, but, what many pilots don't realize is that they can find themselves in violation of the FARs for failing to report alcohol-related motor vehicle actions as required by FAR 61.15 and the Airman's Medical Certificate Application Form 8500-8. FAR 61.15 requires reporting of motor vehicle actions to the FAA's security division within 60 days of the date of the motor vehicle action. The regulation goes on to define motor vehicle actions as convictions for violations of any federal or state statute relating to the operation of a motor vehicle while intoxicated, impaired, or under the influence of alcohol or a drug.
