摘要

FAA regulations are highly specific, and suspected violations may at times be subjected to extremely literal-minded scrutiny. On the other hand, an FAA publication entitled "Aeronautical Decision Making" takes a somewhat more practical view of the realities of day-to-day flying, and concedes, according to a National Transportation Safety Board paraphrase, that "pilots, particularly those with considerable experience, try to complete flights as planned, please passengers, and meet schedules, which can compromise safely and impose an unrealistic assessment of piloting skill under stressful conditions." In other words, pilots―especially experienced ones―take chances. But why should highly experienced pilots be particularly prone to risk-taking? The reason, I suspect, is that they've been there before, seen it all, and been successful taking similar risks in the past They believe in themselves. After all, risk is not the certainty of misfortune, but merely an increased possibility.
