The itinerary was ambitious, to be sure. We were going to show up at three very different events in three very different places in the space of just over 24 hours, and fly more than 1,000 miles in the process. Just the sort of thing that would appeal to almost any pilot with access to a high-performance airplane. This trip had it all: a visit to a new and exotic place to meet new and interesting people, a speech to give at an elegant resort hotel and a graduation dinner ceremony for our finishing surgical residents back home. The weather provided its own amusements as well. It all started when I got an e-mail from Ross Russo, head planner and chief motivator of the "Cayman Caravan," the annual, well organized flight of general aviation airplanes that fly from Key West to Grand Cayman every June. "How about giving a talk to the Caravan pilots in Grand Cayman?" he wanted to know. I could think of no reason not to, so I was soon signed up on the Cayman Caravan's website and had packed a raft and some life jackets into our Cheyenne. The website is sophisticated yet straightforward. It promises to make the trip and the paperwork easy, and it does that and more. I filled in our aircraft performance numbers (fuel burn, airspeed, etc.), our passport numbers, and some contact phone numbers and pushed the enter button.
