A new airport is an exciting thing to behold. A new airport in reasonable proximity to a major metropolitan area is super exciting. Adding airports in such areas is not easy, but there is one at Stafford, Virginia, that is open, that already has instrument approaches, that will have an ILS and a ground communications outlet (GCO), perhaps by the time that you read this, and that has a 5, 000-foot-long runway and plenty of ramp space. Jet fuel and avgas are available from seven to seven every day. No hangars or other services yet. That is on the drawing board and should be along before long. Stafford Regional Airport is next to Interstate 95, and there's a rail line with service to Washington nearby. The D. C. Beltway is about 30 miles north on I-95. The airport, officially designated as a reliever for Dulles and National, was 90 percent paid for by the FAA. Virginia paid eight percent, and three local entities, Stafford and Prince William counties and the city of Fredericksburg, put up two percent. The airport is operated by an airport authority made up of local representatives. The total job came in at $36 million, which was well under budget.
