The King Air 90 Has Been Around For 40 years and long ago laid to rest its last competitor. How could this happen, you might ask, when the King Air has always been the slowest airplane in its class? Don't pilots buy airplanes for speed? Not in this case. The King Air 90 won over generations of pilots and passengers with a superbly comfortable cabin, great flying qualities, top-notch quality, and an airframe that stands tall on the ramp. The airplane appears large and substantial, and it is. Now Blackhawk Modifications, Inc. offers a King Air 90 engine upgrade that markedly improves performance and opens up new altitudes for high-speed cruise. No longer is the King Air the slowest airplane on the block. Blackhawk had been doing engine upgrades for Cessna 425s, but that is a small market, so they decided to do the King Air 90, of which there are many. They bought an STC from Ed Swearingen that covered the installation of PT6A-135A engines and then simplified the process. Ed's mod lowered the engine in relation to the wing and included a new cowling. That is not part of this Blackhawk modification, which involves simply bolting on the new engines and changing some engine gauges. There is no external difference between a C90 and a C90xp.
