The Warning Is Mild At First―Just A little box that pops up on my Garmin 295, cautioning "Airspace ahead within 10 minutes." But as I hold my course, the unit becomes increasingly concerned. It sends out a stronger warning―"Airspace Near and Ahead!" I acknowledge its message but hold my course. The unit tries one more time. As I actually cross the invisible boundary line in the sky, it beeps loudly with a +"Danger, Will Robinson, Danger! Danger!" alarm that, on any other day, would probably signal an impending up-close-and-personal encounter with an F-16 or two. The reason for my Garmin's concern is diat I've just crossed into one of die more restricted Restricted Areas in America―R-2515, the airspace surrounding Edwards Air Force Base. But today, just today ... I'm doing it legally. For in my flight bag sits the permission slips of all permission slips―a civil aircraft permit to actually fly in and land on the Shuttle landing strip at Edwards.
