The phone call had come when I least expected it. A captain I had kept in touch with at a legendary Alaskan airline was on the line. He was offering me the opportunity to begin my dream―a chance to fly for a real airline. A 727 flight engineer class was starting in five days. It was great news. But I had one problem. I already had a job. I was flying right seat on a 727 for a night freight operation out of Denver. And my next trip started on the first day of the class. My captain friend reassured me. If I didn't pick my nose or fall down, I probably had the job. All I had to do was get myself from Denver to Anchorage. A pass would be waiting for me at the ticket counter in Denver. The secretary for the director of operations would meet me upon my arrival in Anchorage. I would interview with the director of operations at the airline's headquarters.
