I read a fascinating article recently written by Nick Kurzon, a documentary filmmaker who was diagnosed with lym-phoma several years ago. On the "My Turn" page in the January 19, 2004 issue of Newsweek he told of how his battle with cancer led him not to religion, but to poker. I am always looking for insights into how we think and act as pilots, and his commentary had several important points we can all learn from. What intrigued Kurzon about poker while he was in the throes of fighting cancer was that "one's fate is quantifiable. You can always measure your place in the universe by calculating the odds of any given hand." To a certain extent the same is true about flying. Each flight we take can be compared with a poker hand. Our basic hand is determined by our past— our original training, the certificates and ratings we hold, our total and recent experience, the type of equipment we are going to be operating, its condition, and our experience in that type of equipment. A pilot getting ready for a flight in a new turbine-powered aircraft with the latest glass cockpit who is ATP rated and has been flying this type of equipment for years in all types of weather is starting out with the strongest possible hand. Although it is still possible for him to lose the hand, he would have to draw some seriously poor cards and also play very poorly to do so.
