Much of the focus on the smithson- ian Institution National Air & Space Museum's new Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles airport has been on the challenge of funding and building the facility itself. But equally important — and equally challenging — has been the process of preparing, moving and installing all the aircraft and spacecraft that are on display in that new facility. Most of the aircraft had been in storage at the museum's Paul E. Garber Restoration and Storage Facility in Silver Hill, Maryland. The facility has a staff of 23 restoration specialists, who normally work on restoring and preserving the 355 aircraft and 180 space artifacts in the mu-seum's collection. But all restoration work stopped in 1999 — a full year before ground was even broken for the Udvar- Hazy Center — in order to start preparing for the arduous task of moving the museum's collection to its new home.
