I've been spoiled. although i'm based in New York, most of my flights are westward from Columbia County Airport (1B1) and, after flying to ATHOS, a local intersection, I'm usually given GPS direct clearances. I'd heard complaints about convoluted routings from outlanders visiting New York bur I'd been spared. Until recently. The mission was to fly to New York's Westchester County Airport (HPN) for a lunch with Flying co-workets. After lunch I would fly out to Sporty's in Batavia, Ohio, to help draw the winning number for Sporty's annual airplane sweepstakes giveaway. Reluctant to leave the lunch, I was a tad late getting back to the airport, so I called Sporty's to advise that I'd be late for the "rehearsal" dinner and not to wait for me. The call was my way of reducing what John King calls external pressure, and removing one element that increases risk in general aviation flights... the need to be somewhere at a specific time.
