摘要

The folks who give names to tropical events blew it big time on the August storms, officially named Bonnie and Charley. I am sure Clyde is rolling over in his grave about that one. Nomenclature aside, it was one of the most fascinating weather events that I can remember, coming as it did toward the end of an unusual meteorological summer. I am writing this on Thursday, August 12. The prognosis is that Bonnie will be here at eight o'clock tomorrow morning and that Charley will be overhead at eight on Saturday evening. Both are progged to move far faster than tropical storms usually move. The centers of both storms are expected to move within 40 miles of our house. Why are they moving so fast? There is a deep trough aloft, with unusually strong winds out of the south-southwest over the eastern United States. One forecast discussion that I read mentioned 130-knot winds in the jet core. That is rare in the summer. Those winds are up high, in the thirties, which is higher than usual for steering currents for storm systems.
