"I show you a mile south of the localizer," the controller called. It was my first ever solo flight in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) and I was off course. I was also on my way from Morristown (New Jersey) Municipal Airport to Teter-boro Airport, just a short hop, to take the check ride with an FAA examiner for my Instrument Instructor (CFI-I) rating. Think about that for a moment. The first time I flew an actual IFR flight on my own was on the flight to take my instrument instructor practical flight test. If I was successful, I would be granted the privilege―and awesome responsibility―to train other pilots to fly on instruments in weather that wouldn't allow flying under visual rules. Although I would be permitted to instruct others in the techniques of instrument flying, I had virtually no in-the-clouds-head-down experience of my own. I didn't know jack. What's even more disturbing is that my situation isn't all that unusual. By the time most pilots earn their instrument rating they haven't had much―if any ―actual experience flying blind. There's nothing in the regulations that requires a candidate for the instrument rating to have ever flown in instrument meteorological conditions; all of the instrument work required for the rating may be performed under a hood or in a simulator.
