The beep is subtle. But when it goes off there's a slight increase in the tension of the three others at the table with me. Phil Newson talks into his cell phone for a minute, nods and then stands. The other two stand and head toward the exit. "Let's go," Newson says, looking down at me where I sit with my coffee. "We've got a call." Newson's blue flight suit, with a name tag that identifies him as aviation services manager, is as much out of place among the white lab coats of the staff of the Albany Medical Center as is his slight British accent Tom Walsh, a paramedic, and Mike Carrier, a flight nurse, have the elevator waiting for us. We're headed up to the office of Albany Med Flight, a member of the LifeNet network of EMS (emergency medical service) programs operated around the country by Rocky Mountain Helicopters, based in Provo, Utah. The office is nondescript, but framed letters, articles and plaques leave no doubt about what the helicopter service has meant to the capital region of New York since its inception in February 1996.
