摘要

It's been almost a year and half since I walked the block of devasta-tion in Belle Harbor, New York. The charred smell of the crash site was the first attack on my senses. The smell is not something you forget. I had put on a Tyvec suit, helping to pull pieces of the airplane out of the wreckage. I had pulled other things out of the wreckage that are better left unmentioned. I had nodded silently to all of the soot-stained, worn-out faces, also in Tyvec suits. Some of the faces had the 100-yard stare. A lot of those stares had been at the World Trade Center only two months earlier. For those of you who have experienced similar tragedies, nothing more needs to be said. For those of you who have not experienced a similar tragedy, try to avoid the opportunity. This month's column is not about the tragedy of American Airlines Flight 587, but rather the triumph. From the rubble of this wreckage emerged some very positive aspects. This included tremendous dedication and personal sacrifice from my fellow pilots. It also included meticulous research from all of the investigative parties. More important, it will eventually include a better understanding of how to prevent future accidents.
