Exactly one year ago, in june 2002, I wrote an article titled "Avoiding Midairs." Now I sit at my desk a year later reading the preliminary NTSB report on the midair collision that occurred earlier this year, killing everyone onboard the two air-craft and injuring people on the ground. This accident has many similarities to the ones I discussed in that article. It oc-curred in the vicinity of an airport. The weather was good, although the collision occurred at night, which is unusual. Finally, both pilots were talking to the same controller.
