I have loved flying with my grand- father, Pop-Pop, since I was very young, and one Christmas Eve I was grateful that I learned to fly with him and did so as often as possible. On a mid-semester break, I came home from college especially anxious for some flying time with him. He reserved the Piper Cherokee Six for December 24th, his 78th birthday. After preflighting the airplane and warming up the engine, we were all set to head up to Groton, Connecticut, for a bit of lunch. With Pop-Pop flying and me as copilot we were cleared for takeoff on Westchester County's Runway 34. As the airplane began its takeoff roll and speed gathered beneath the wings, we gently rose from the ground and began what would become one of the most horrifying experiences of either of our lives. As we approached Bridgeport, Connecticut, and an altitude of 4,000 feet, Pop-Pop leaned over and said, "You have the, plane." He would often hand over the controls for a short time during a flight just to give me a feel for the airplane. I took over a bit reluctantly this time, since I had trouble reading all of the instruments from the right seat.
