Karl meisterheim, 24, a com-puter programmer, began flight training in Battle Creek, Michigan, at the end of his junior year in high school. Karl and his father started training together with the same instructor. They would ride along on each other's lessons, but his father dropped out before solo and Karl stepped up the pace of his training and got his private certificate in May of 1998 and his instrument rating in December, 2002. Karl is deeply indebted to his father for letting him fulfill this dream. Karl graduated from the University of Michigan College of Engineering and is currently flying a 2002 180-horsepower 172S Skyhawk that is operated by the University of Michigan Flyers, Inc., a club that operates out of the Ann Arbor, Michigan, municipal airport. Despite the name and the university affiliation of the club, membership is open to the general public.
