When I first made captain in the DC-3 back in 1989, I received a sage bit of advice. I was told that I would not be a real captain until I had experienced a 30-knot crosswind, flown through a Michigan winter in the left seat and, last but not least, feathered an engine in flight and then shot a single-engine ILS down to the nubs in heavy weather. In January 1994, I became a real captain. I had dispensed with the 30-knot requirement the previous December, landing at my Michigan home base in a steady, frigid gale that took all the aileron and all the rudder input I could muster plus a nice dose of upwind throttle to keep her straight. It had been a battle royal. In its aftermath, after taxiing in and shutting down I began to appreciate the reasoning that led to the invention of the nosewheel.
