On his return from operations in Suez, Al Greethurst was disappointed to learn that 109 Squadron was to be disbanded (see War Ops: Suez in June's issue). Even more so to discover its crews and Canberras were to join 139 Squadron and that he was earmarked to fly with its rather eccentric CO Wg Cdr Peter 'Willie' Helmore. However, fate was to lend a hand, as Al recalled: "Dick Perowne, the former lead navigator on 109, had approached me previously to help him build a nav section on the Vulcan Operational Conversion Unit [OCU] at Waddington, but at the time I was happy where I was. When 109 morphed into 139, however, my pilot Captain Bob Old left the squadron, leaving me 'spare'. Helmore had brought his 'pet' navigator, making me the odd one out. I called Dick and asked whether the job offer was still open. I was on my way the very next day."
