In response to Rob Glover's letter 'Landing A Canberra On Grass' in the January issue, I can confirm that it was indeed John 'Cats Eyes' Cunningham who landed the Comet on the grass strip at RAF Halton. I was a trainee gliding instructor with 617 Squadron of the Air Training Corps based on the airfield during 1959. According to witnesses, when Cunningham brought the Comet in, the undercarriage just cleared the boundary fence, in those days a wooden post and rail of about 1.5m in height. It was a magnificent achievement by any standards. I parted with 617 in late 1959 and therefore did not see the Canberra that arrived the following year in the hands of Rob and his Jet Ferry Squadron crew.
