Your September article about Elly Beinhorn in FlyPast's 'Women of Aviation series prompted me to remember Margaret Thomas 'Tommy' Warren, a charter member at the age of 17 of the famous '99s', the society formed by the 99 women pilots of the USA. She learned to fly at the Texas Air Transport Flying School in Fort Worth, earning Private Pilot Licence No 6180 after qualifying in an OX-5 Travelair in early 1929. By 1930, she had joined the Curtiss-Wright Exhibition Company as part of its stunt team. After World War Two, she and her retired USMC husband moved from the US to West Cork, Ireland. Like Tommy, my wife was a through-and-through Texan, with a shared passion for books, so when we moved to West Cork in 2000 it was inevitable that we would encounter one another. In the four years before her passing, we enjoyed regular visits to Tommy's fascinating home in Castletownsend.
