Formed at Bankstown in New South Wales on May 23,1941, under the shadow of the growing tensions in South East Asia, 453 Squadron Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) was quickly dispatched to Singapore in August that year. Arriving at RAF Sembawang in the north of the small country, its Brewster Buffalo fighters followed a short while later, before 453's pilots hurriedly began working up on the type. Several who had previously flown the Avro Anson, and had no single-seat interceptor experience, converted to the portly looking fighter via the CAC Wirraway.
