First formed at South Carlton near Lincoln on September 28,1917,96 Squadron mainly flew the BE.2c to provide operational training of pilots and observers. It continued with this prosaic task until being disbanded on July 4,1918. It was then reformed at Wyton, Huntingdonshire (now Cambridgeshire), on September 28 to introduce the new Sopwith Salamander trench-strafing fighter to service - but because of the Armistice it was disbanded at the end of November.
