Ulric Cross was working for Trinidad Railways when he volunteered to join the RAF - it was the start of an extraordinary career. In 1941 he sailed for England where he trained as a navigator at Cranwell, Lincolnshire. After gaining his brevet, he joined 139 (Jamaica) Squadron equipped with the de Havilland Mosquito - many of the aircraft were paid for by donations made by the citizens of Jamaica. Cross was the only West Indian on the squadron, where he was fondly called 'The Black Hornet'.
