Thank you for the excellent feature by Malcolm V Lowe on RAF recce Spits in the April issue of FlyPast, a complex subject well covered. In the article, mention is rightly made of the role Sidney Cotton played in the development of the RAF's reconnaissance capabilities, which were essentially non-existent at the start of World War Two. Cotton is a fascinating individual, whose history is too long to cover in a short note, but the book, Aviator Extraordinary, published in 1969, covers it in great detail. In addition to his expertise in aerial photography, Cotton had a very inventive mind. During the Great War he was an RNAS pilot on the Western Front and discovered, after he got airborne in a rush wearing oily and greasy overalls, that he was considerably warmer than other colleagues in their standard flying gear. This led him to rapidly develop a flying suit with layers of thin fur,airproof oiled silk and Burberry material, the well-known Sidcot Suit, which was in use for many years - Alcock and Brown wore them during their Atlantic-crossing flight for example. Although the name Sidcot was clearly derived from his own names, it is interesting to note that he took no royalties on sales of the suit.
