Based on an operational air base, Gilze-Rijen, the Royal Netherlands Air Force Historic Flight Foundation is often compared with the RAF's Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. While there are similarities and strong ties with the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) there is a big difference: the Dutch Flight is a completely private foundation with no governmental financial support. The roots of the Flight go back to 1969 when a small group of former air force pilots founded the Gilze-Rijen Flight Sports Club with three Piper Super Cubs and were allowed to settle in a remote corner of the base. After a few years, the club gained a Harvard II, expanding the training to heavier aircraft.
