Your Spotlight on the Vickers Valiant mentions a visit to Pretoria, South Africa. That would have been to Waterkloof air force base, which was home to 2 Squadron, SAAF - the 'Flying Cheetahs' of Korean War fame. I was doing my national service at the time. Our camp was 7 or 8 miles from Waterkloof - close enough for us to be able to watch (with much envy) their Canadian Sabres [see February FlyPast calendar] bucketing around the circuit. One day, word went round that "an RAF bomber" was to land at Waterkloof the following day. Being an eternal optimist, I kept peering in the direction of Waterkloof. Sometime during the day I saw an unfamiliar shape coming in to land. Though I can't be sure, it is possible that this could have been the Valiant.
