Designed to meet a French Navy requitement for a carrier-based anti-submarine warfare aircraft the Breguet Alize (Tradewind) was developed from an earlier attack prototype, the mixed-powerplant Vultur. Bearing a loose resemblance to the earlier British-built Fairey Gannet, the first prototype Alize flew at Biarritz on October 6, 1956, in the hands of Breguet test pilot Yves Brunaud. At that time Arromanches, the former HMS Colossus and the only French aircraft carrier, was on extended maintenance. So carrier trials were held aboard the Royal Navy's HMS Eagle.
