Lockheed's famous 'Skunk Works' at Palmdale,California, came up with a radical interceptor that had its first flight on March 4,1954. It was the F-104 Starfighter which went operational with the USAF in February 1958.By the time production ended,Lockheed and licence-builders had manufactured a total of 2,578 aircraft. The Italian Air Force was the last to use the F-104's retiring the type in 2004.During its early stages, the USAF saw the F-104's potential as virtually unlimited,It could compete with anything the Russians had.
