Arriving at USAAF Station 356, commercial artist I )on Allen expected to settle in as a crew chief at the fighter base, looking after P-47 Thunderbolts and P-51 Mustangs mechanically. Instead, he found himself in great demand painting nose-art on the aircraft's cowlings - a most unusual task for a crew chief. Don had been sent to Debden in Essex, home of'The Eagles' - the 4th Fighter Croup.
