The Imperial War Museum Duxford is holding another one of its special open days on August 11, and this time the theme is Animals in War. Animals have always had a role to play in conflicts, carrying messages and codes, detecting and rescuing, and - in the case of horses - being ridden into battle. Dogs in particular were popular companions and mascots among airmen during World War Two. A memorial to Guy Gibson's canine pal survives at Scampton, while 'Johnnie' Johnson was frequently photographed with his black Labrador Sally, and George Unwin with Flash, his trusty Alsatian (as seen in the above photo). A special, one-off event at Duxford will honour the often surprising and courageous parts played by our four-legged friends in warfare over the years. With an opportunity to meet some working animals, it promises to be a great family day out. Normal museum entrance fees apply.
