Suited men from the Directorate of Public Works descended upon Maidstone Airport at West Mailing in Kent during 1939. War was on the way and flying clubs were being forced to give way to the military. The visitors liked what they saw and a 'Notice of Possession' was handed to Walter Laidlaw, proprietor of Mailing Aviation. With a heavy heart he closed the clubhouse and handed over the keys. Expansion began rapidly with the setting up of a station headguarters, buildings for personnel, a watch office, a 'J-type' and several 'blister' hangars.
