Painted in its distinctive all blue scheme, PM631 is the BBMF's longest serving aircraft. Built in 1945 as an unarmed, high altitude photo-reconnaissance Mk.XIX with a pressurised cockpit and a Griffon 66 engine, it was designed to fly at up to 370mph (595km/h) at 40,000ft (12,192m), and had a range of 1,500 miles. Too late for operational service in World War Two, it instead flew with 203 Advanced Flying School from May 1949, having been delivered to the RAF three years earlier. As it was no longer reguired for the role it had been designed for, it was modified for meteorological duties.
