Having joined the RAF in 1983, Ian did his initial training at Swinderby, Notts, on DHC Chipmunks and then at Church Fenton, Yorks, on Hunting Jet Provosts. He was then selected for helicopter training, going to Shawbury, Shropshire, and from there his first posting was on twin-rotor Boeing Chinooks in Germany with 18 Squadron. Ian also undertook tours in Northern Ireland and the Falkland Islands.rnHe was back to 'JPs' in 1989, with the Central Flying School at Scampton, Lincs, becoming a Qualified Flying Instructor. Then came a move to Linton-on-Ouse in Yorkshire introducing his students to the rudiments of fast jet training.
