The advent of types featuring a tricycle landing gear in the Soviet Union created the need for a similarly-configured trainer. Yakovlev brought out the Yak-18U which had a semi-retractable tricycle gear to minimise the damage in the event of a gear-up landing. It was initially powered by a 160hp (119kW) Shvetsov M-11FR five-cylinder radial driving a two-bladed wooden propeller, but this was soon replaced by the new 260hp Ivchenko AI-14R nine-cylinder.rnNow designated Yak-18A, it was studied by the design office of the Shenyang Aircraft Factory - and rejected as being outdated!
