As World War Two broke out, Yorkshire-born A 'Blondie' Walker was in the building industry. It was a reserved occupation, but he was mad keen to fly and joined the RAF in August 1939 when he was 23-years old. It was some time before he was called up to start his aircrew training at the Initial Training Wing at Torquay in Devon.rnIn the spring of 1941, Blondie arrived at 22 Elementary Flying Training School, Cambridge. His first flight came on May 22 in Tiger Moth N6978 with Fg Off Walenn as his instructor. The weather was fine and rapid progress was made and he went solo a fortnight later after ten hours flying time. He finished the course on July 1 having flown 69 hours and assessed as 'above average.
