Claire Chennault, famed for creating the 'Flying Tigers' that fought the Japanese in China in 1941; Ira Eaker the man who forged the USAAF's Eighth Air Force in 1942; and Carl Spaatz, another Eighth 'boss' and from 1944 commander of US Strategic Air Forces - all of these aviation icons praised Boeing's biplane fighters to the hilt, and they were not alone.
