The Mexican Senate on June 19, by an overwhelming 114-4 vote, ratified the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which was signed by the heads of state of the United States, Mexico and Canada on Nov. 30,2018, to replace the existing North American Free Trade Agreement. Mexico is the first of the three trading partners to ratify the accord. The road to Mexico's ratification of the agreement encountered some last-minute bumps when President Donald Trump a couple of weeks earlier threatened to impose escalating tariffs on all Mexican goods imported into the United States unless Mexico acceded to U.S. demands that it increase its border security to stem the flow of immigrants through Mexico and into the United States. The Mexican government agreed to step up its efforts to thwart immigrant attempts to enter the United States, and President Trump withdrew the tariff threat.
